February saw the fifth installment of Collect Seattle, a new arts-integration venture by curator Yonnas Getahun, Vermillion gallerist Diana Adams and Elisheba Johnson of the Office of Arts & Culture. Once a month they charter a biodiesel bus, fill it with 12 people and fill those people with champagne. Then they voyage through the open galleries of a neighborhood art walk. The object is to encourage people to purchase their first piece of art, preferably by a local artist.
“These people want to experience the art scene but feel like they’re not cool enough or they don’t know where to go,” Johnson says. “So we act as curator of experience. They trust us to know what places have the best art.”
